Overview of the cyclic response of reinforced concrete members subjected to artificial chloride‐induced corrosion

Abstract Reinforced concrete (RC) elements suffer continuous deterioration across their lifetime from in situ aggressive environmental factors. Chloride‐induced of the steel reinforcement presents significant repercussions on mechanical and seismic behavior affected RC members. This paper introduces summarizes experimental work carried out at University Canterbury, investigating long‐term implications chloride‐induced various properties. The impact chloride corrosion bond‐slip behavior, cyclic flexural response large‐scale piers, shear resistance short columns, with particular focus latter, is reported. Results indicate that damage more severe consequences to displacement ductility columns than load‐bearing capacity. Transverse a much greater risk vulnerability deterioration, leading transition failure mechanism ductile brittle shear/shear‐bond failure. Reduced confinement negatively impacts stress–strain confined cracked members, where friction relied upon as primary load‐transfer once interlock lost through generation rust by‐products splitting.
